Springfield's Sculptures, Monuments, and Plaques (Images of America: Illinois) Springfield is the capital of Illinois and the home of Abraham Lincoln and Vachel Lindsay. The city is filled with history, and that fact is reflected in the many sculptures, monuments, and plaques that have been commissioned to commemorate this history. The city contains more than 14 statues and busts of Abraham Lincoln. Famous sculptors have created 17 statues inside the state capitol alone, and 13 more statues and sculptures are located on the capitol grounds. The states Capital Development Board sponsors the Art-in-Architecture program and provides funding for newly commissioned sculptures in state-funded public buildings. Several major American sculptors are represented in the many works, including Leonard Volk, Leonard Crunelle, Larkin Mead, Fred Torrey, and James Earl Fraser. Works of contemporary artists such as Michael Dunbar, Richard Hunt, and Preston Jackson are also present. Oak Ridge Cemetery contains four war memorials and Abraham Lincolns tomb. Each of the sculptures, monuments, and plaques has a story to tell and helps to make Springfields history come alive.

Limiting Dilution Analysis of Cells of the Immune System This new edition is an extensive treatise on the rationale of limiting dilution analysis (LDA). LDA has evolved from its previous role as a basic research laboratory tool in virology and immunology to one pertaining to many different research disciplines and to clinical applications. New methodologies (such as PCR, confocal microscopy, in situ hybridisation) have emerged, with the result that single-cell assays can now be performed on a more defined basis, and the quantitation of cells and their precursors is now more accessible to the limiting dilution approach. This book includes both detailed mathematical derivations and methodological descriptions so that the uninitiated scientist can set up and evaluate limiting dilution experiments without further instruction. It also describes particular examples of how LDA is being used to determine clinical practice. The second edition of this highly successful book, which has been on the shelf of every modern immunology laboratory for the last two decades, retains the same overall structure of the first edition, with one important addition - an extensive LDA software package. The LDA program and the simulation software will be linked to a web site to ensure updates at regular intervals. The first edition was written primarily for immunologists, but this volume has been expanded so that it will be useful to a broader audience in microbiology, pathology, virology and cellular biology. Furthermore, this volume is intended to be used as additional reading for students of biology and medicine whose knowledge of the applications of Poisson distribution need refreshing.
Khepereru-scarabs: Scarabs, Scaraboids, and Plaques from Egypt and the Ancient Near East in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore In the present volume, the holdings of the Walters Art Museum of scarabs from ancient Egypt and the ancient Near East are published for the first time. Although scarabs and other related objects from the minor arts field were well-known and appreciated, their systematic research began only in the last decades. The current stock of published scarabs and seals permit a much better understanding of their development, dating, and diversity of motifs. The mind boggling variety of scarabs in all their diverse aspects gives important information on, until now, unknown material, and will strengthen the scholarly judgment by detail.
